Handy Adjustable Tailgate System
What began as a simple solution for hauling dirt bikes has evolved into a product that makes pickup trucks more versatile for both work and recreation.
The idea came to Steve Castelblanco after a strap he used to support a partially open tailgate broke during a trip.
“We lost some gear when the strap system I put together broke in the desert,” Castelblanco says. “I decided I needed to find an alternative to keep my tailgate up and the fun stuff in the back where it belongs.”
The experience led to the development of Gate King, an adjustable tailgate support system that replaces factory tailgate cables. Early versions encountered issues, prompting additional design work.
To refine the product, Castelblanco enlisted his father, an engineer with experience in NASA-related designs. Together, they developed a durable locking tailgate system.
Unlike universal-fit products, Gate King is designed for specific truck models.
“We make them per truck; not one size fits all,” he says. “Some trucks have a larger span than others, so each needs a different application.”
Customers order the product based on their truck’s year, make and model to ensure proper fit and performance.
“Installation is straightforward. Anyone who can use a wrench can install it in about 10 to 15 min by manipulating only four bolts,” Castelblanco says. “We take off the existing stock tailgate cables and replace them with our product to get the angle perfect and fit the right bolt pattern.”
Constructed from chromoly steel, 1 1/4 in. wide and 3/16 in. thick, the supports are engineered for strength. Length varies by vehicle application, and stainless-steel hardware is included.
The system locks tailgates into eight positions using a ratchet-and-pin design.
“Just lift the tailgate to your desired angle and listen for the click. When you hear it, the ratchet and pin system is engaged and locked. In the neutral position, they function like your stock cables,” Castelblanco explains.
Originally developed for transporting motorcycles, the product has become especially popular among trailer owners.
“People don’t have to lower their tailgate and worry about it hitting the jack. They can lower it to whatever angle they need and lock it in place.”
Gate King is sold through retailers including Home Depot, Tractor Supply and Cycle Gear. Most manufacturing occurs in California, and the product carries a minimum advertised price of $249.99 plus S&H.
