Pole Improves At-Home Mobility
Stander Inc. of Logan, Utah, offers a range of mobility devices to make movement safer at home.
“Stander’s story began with a desire to help a loved one remain independent at home,” says Justin Kidman, company representative. “Our founder, Jan Miller, was a teacher who became a caregiver for her grandma, Essie. Like many older adults, Essie wanted to stay in her own home rather than move into a care facility, but few products were available to help her do so. Together with her husband, Jan created practical solutions that would help Essie perform everyday tasks on her own.”
Today, Stander products are designed for easy installation, intuitive use, and to be attractive enough to blend naturally into the home.
“What started as a way to help her grandmother has grown into a company dedicated to helping older adults maintain their independence, dignity and confidence while aging in place,” says Kidman. “At Stander, we believe products should be safe, effective and designed for real life. We spend a tremendous amount of time understanding how people actually move around their homes and where they need support.”
Stander products ease the discomfort of getting out of bed, stepping into a bathtub, standing from a chair, and more. One popular product line is the Wonder Pole, a family of floor-to-ceiling transfer poles that provide stable support throughout the home without requiring permanent installation.
“The Wonder Pole offers support exactly where it’s needed while preserving the look and function of the home,” says Kidman. “It can be placed next to a bed, between a toilet and bathtub, in a living room, or anywhere additional support is needed. We’ve expanded the Wonder Pole over the years into a complete lineup featuring different handle styles, finishes, sizes and price points.”
The pole weighs 20 lbs and is made of rust-resistant, zinc-plated steel with a durable powder-coat finish. With a rotating, locking handle that engages every 45 degrees, the pole adjusts to fit ceilings from 7 to 9 ft and supports up to 300 lbs. The tension mount allows for easy installation in any room — no screws or drilling required. Use it anywhere extra support is valued — from a bath safety bar to a bed-assist handle, support for stairs and chair lifts, or a living room aid.
“Unlike traditional grab bars that require drilling into walls, the Wonder Bathtub Pole securely mounts between the tub wall and ceiling with no drilling or permanent attachment required,” says Kidman. “This creates a sturdy support system that provides assistance both inside and outside the tub, helping users safely enter, exit and bathe.”
Because it doesn’t require major remodeling, many homeowners appreciate that it can be installed quickly without modifying the bathroom, while still providing dependable assistance.
“Most people wait until after an injury to think about home safety,” says Kidman. “By that point, the consequences of a fall can be significant. People are often reluctant to use mobility equipment because it can feel institutional or out of place in the home. As a result, they go without support until it’s too late. We believe safety products should fit seamlessly into everyday life, so we focus on creating solutions that are easy to use and install and that complement the home.”
The Wonder Bathtub Pole has an MSRP of $269 and is available for purchase on the company website or through the “Where to Buy” feature, which locates the nearest store carrying Stander products.
