Farmer Sees Results With Passive Venting System
Greg Cravens reports that 4 years of documented research and 7 years of satisfaction by a customer verify that the 360 Products Dry-ConX (Vol. 45, No. 4) passive venting works.
“We had contact from a man in Texas in early 2019 who was losing as much as 30% of the pelleted deer feed he stored in a shipping container,” says Cravens. “He had 1-ton totes on pallets, but the sealed shipping container would trap heat and humidity. Resulting moisture damaged the feed and produced toxic, overwhelming fumes.”
After purchasing and installing the 360 Products Dry-ConX venting system in early April 2019, conditions improved dramatically. Cravens shared the man’s first name and the results he recorded over the 4 years following installation.
“John told us the container became comfortable to enter even on extreme heat and humidity days, and the venting successfully curtailed the moisture-related losses,” says Cravens. “He started recording temperature and humidity inside and outside the container prior to installation and continued to do so on a daily basis. He shared the data with us, and we posted it on our website.”
Results can be summarized as a consistent 20% to 30% drop in humidity. Even when internal temperatures were higher, the heat was much drier, with none of the condensation referred to as container rain.
“I can’t explain what a difference your product has made for my container,” reported John in August 2019. “On a day like yesterday, with high heat and humidity, the inside of that container would normally be unbearable. Thousands of pounds of feed, a sealed container, high heat and humidity created toxic fumes that were overwhelming. Your venting system has corrected these issues, and now my container is comfortable to enter even on these extreme days. Thank you for a great product!”
Similar results were reported through April 2023, with no grain loss due to moisture. John reported consistently positive results, with grain moisture averaging 13.5% to 14% over the 4 years. The highest recorded grain moisture was 14.5%.
At one point, 360 Products considered offering a low-output, solar-powered fan system to supplement the passive system. A prototype was sent to John, but it had no impact on results, so the company abandoned the concept.
“I don’t know how you can improve on perfect since there’s no grain loss without the fans,” concluded John.
By January 2026, grain loss remained at zero, and John issued a final report: “I sold my place a few months ago, but I’m happy to report that your system worked flawlessly from day one,” he said.
Cravens notes similar results among other customers, including a woman who buys hay in Virginia and has it shipped to Colorado. Once there, she stores it in a shipping container equipped with Dry-ConX venting.
“She’s used our system for 3 years with excellent results,” he says.
Air movement is key to the system’s success. As air enters one end of the container and travels through it, it picks up heat and moisture before exiting at the other end.
Cravens notes that the more space in the container, the better the venting works.
“John’s totes took up about 40% of the container volume,” he says. “That meant that our venting mixed the air in the remaining 60% of the container. With hay, we have to tell customers to leave space for the air to move through. When containers are 100% full or empty, lowering the humidity is the hardest, but it still works.”
